Hi Gilbert - I know this an older post but it's new to me (Stephen King's version of time travel..).

This is has become my Facebook profile favourite quote:

"Nationalists would arduously deny that cultural norms are relative and that national identity is just an illusion, a fabrication of the ego to rationally justify its irrational fears. They would argue that their way of life is absolute and supreme. Any learned man would see the shallowness and outright stupidity of this."

There are things about where I live that I'm proud of and there are others that I'm not. Just because my ancestors chose to settle here, doesn't mean I should follow the leaders of this country like a blind sheep!

Gilbert,

I am new to your blog, enjoyed your post from Dumb Little man- I was looking a this post and I agree with many of your tennants, but your last one, Nationalism/Fascism needs some clarification...

I really think that it is healthy for a country to have a shared culture among its people. I think to put Nationalism with Fascism is incorrect.

I feel that being truly American is feeling proud of our constitution, the philosphies of Gearge Washington, Ben Franklin, Abe Lincoln and the like.

Facsism is a twisted political philosphy that strives to contril the group mind and create a Godless society where the dictator decides whats best for its countrymen and when a facsist dictoator is done there he goes on to cause Worl Wars and attempts world domination.

TO be inspired by your country and to feel proud of who you are and where you come from is a great shared experience that can foster self growth. That is why I personally belief in borders, culture and language.

[...] In today’s world there still are general collective mindsets or beliefs, we call ‘worldviews’, that even though not directly harmful are at best a hindrance to human creativity but can turn into hatred and violence at their fiercest. I have picked up the top five worldviews which I personally believe the world would be a better place without. [Full Article] [...]

Hi Jeanne,

Thanks for the great comment. "I believe my response to your words shows me I’m not walking my talk" - on the contrary Jeanne, I think that you are actually walking your talk if you get upsetting and revolting feelings as you read such stuff. It means you are focusing your consciousness and energies on the good stuff right?

Anyway, the same thing happens to me each and every time...even when I was writing the article!

Gilbert, I agree SO wholeheartedly, especially your description of the "flattened view of science". Your list is sobering.

As I read this post I felt some "negative" vibrations rising up in my gut --- feelings of frustration, impatience, and anger toward those who hold these worldviews.

This surprised me. Then I thought, most of the time I'm reading "feel-good" stuff on blogs; in fact I feed myself a pretty steady diet of said stuff. I believe my response to your words shows me I'm not walking my talk. Humbling. Thanks for the wake-up call!

Number 5 is great. Sometimes when meditating or drifting off to sleep, I use the mantra "I am one." Meaning that I am part of everything and everything is part of me. We are all part of the same oneness.
